Tips on travelling

The Okstindan Nature & Culture Park is situated at the heart of magnificent Helgeland. It is easily accessible by train, car, plane and boat. Welcome!

TRAIN (+ ELECTRIC BIKE / HYBRID ELECTRIC CAR)

The railway is an eco-friendly way to travel, and the Nordland Line is a convenient and affordable way to get here. From Bodø your trip takes about 3.5 hours, while from Trondheim it takes about 6 hours. When you get off at Bjerka Railway Station, you have arrived.

Unless you have someone picking you up, you can take a bus or order a taxi from the station. The nearest bus stop, Stasjonskrysset, is just a five-minute walk away. Another great option is to rent an hybrid electric car from Nordvik Bil, which is situated right by Bjerka station. Electric bikes are available for rent from several providers. Check out the links to the right.

During the daytime, a taxi from the train station to the village of Hemnesberget will cost you approx. 500 NOK. If you plan to hike the Okstindan mountains, the taxi to Inderdalen Farm at the trailhead for Gråfjellhytta cabin (DNT) costs about 570 NOK. The price is about the same to get to the trailhead at the head of Leirskardalen valley. If you prefer to start your hike from Leirbotn, which is another 5 km along a gravel road, add 200–300 NOK. This is where the well-marked trail to the renowned Rabothytta cabin starts. (During the winter this gravel road may be closed.) On weekends and during the evening, the above prices are subject to a surcharge.

PLANES

The two nearest airports are Mo i Rana Airport Røssvoll and Mosjøen Airport Kjærstad. Widerøe has several daily flights to these from Trondheim and Bodø. Taxis are of course available from both airports, and from Mo i Rana Airport there is an airport shuttle that costs about 150 NOK per person.

Mo i Rana Airport Røssvoll is situated a 45-minute drive from the villages of Korgen and Hemnesberget. Car rental is available at the airport. Alternatively you can take the airport bus to the town of Mo i Rana, and from there travel by train to Bjerka or by bus to the villages of Finneidfjord, Hemnesberget, Bjerka or Korgen. A daytime taxi from the airport all the way to Korgen will set you back 1350 NOK. From the town centre of Mo i Rana the price is around 1000 NOK.

If you take the airport shuttle to the town centre (150 NOK), the bus to Korgen or the train to Bjerka Station will cost you only around 100 NOK. For more details about train prices, please see below. Please note that taxis have a surcharge during the weekend, on evenings and at night.

In the town of Mo i Rana, car rental is offered by Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and Rent-A-Wreck.

If you want a taxi, it is best to book in advance. Please call tel. +47 959 59 153 if you are based in Korgen, or tel. +47 959 59 157 if you are in Hemnesberget. For more information about approximate taxi fares, please see the sections on Trains and Planes.

If you are travelling by road from the north, drive highway E6 through the villages of Finneidfjord, Bjerka and Korgen. At Finneidfjord, take the turnoff from highway E6 and continue towards Hemnesberget on route Fv. 808. At Korgen, take the turnoff from E6 and drive route Fv. 806 to reach Bleikvasslia and Røssvatnet lake. This is part of the scenic Wilderness Road (Villmarksveien), and you can drive all the way to Majavatn lake and then continue on highway E6 south from there.

Also if you are coming from the south, we strongly recommend choosing the Wilderness Road (Villmarksveien), which is the scenic alternative to highway E6. Take the turnoff just north of Majavatn lake and follow the signs to Fiplingdal and Villmarksveien (the Wilderness Road). This route takes you to Korgen via Hattfjelldal, Vesterbukt and Bleikvasslia. The scenic route from Majavatn lake to Korgen is about 140 km.

There is a charging station for electric vehicles at Circle K in Korgen, near Korgensenteret shopping centre and just off highway E6.

CARAVAN

There are several places in our district where you can empty your caravan’s septic tank. Unfortunately, we do not offer greywater disposal. For more details, please click the link to the right. Petrol and diesel, as well as propane canisters, are available at Circle K by highway E6 in Korgen. Petrol and diesel is also available at the Hemnesberget gas station (credit card machine only). For caravan parking, please find detailed info under Accommodation in the top menu.

BUS

The company Boreal Buss operates bus services between the villages of our district, and to the towns of Mo i Rana, Mosjøen and Sandnessjøen. Please note that some routes only run on school days.

BOAT

If you are travelling by your own boat, our municipality offers three guest harbours. Bjerka boat harbour has two guest berths and is situated close to the train station and the beach. Marina Hemnesberget has 14 guest berths; it is situated in the historic area of Lapphella, right by the Coop Prix supermarket and the café “Baksterkailln & Kokken”. For your convenience, there is a service building here with laundry, showers and toilets, including with handicap access. Finneidfjord also has an attractive marina at the north end of the village.
