The Okstindan Nature and Culture Park is actively used by Sámi reindeer herders. In fact, our park comprises two reindeer grazing districts. There is a good chance you might spot reindeer in the mountain wilderness, especially on the Okstindan mountain range. In hot weather, reindeer ascend to cooler higher altitudes and even onto the glacier to avoid being plagued by swarms of annoying insects. Reindeer are not dangerous, but the reindeer and the Sámi would keenly appreciate it if you avoid spooking them. Keep a respectful distance, don’t walk towards them, and keep your dog leashed.
