Okstindan is also called the roof of Northern Norway and the highest peaks are almost 2000 m above sea level. The weather here changes in a second. It can be beautiful winter weather down in the village and a hurricane blowing in the mountains. A winter trip in Okstindan therefore requires more of you, and more of the equipment you have with you, than a trip in summer weather! Therefore, always remember to check the weather forecast before you go and bring enough clothes and food, as well as a map and compass!
To get to Rabothytta you have to park at the end of the county road in Leirskarddalen, at Melkarhella, and plan on skiing up to the cabin for several hours. You also have to be aware that the cabin can be so icy that it is not possible to get inside, but this only happens in exceptional cases. In any case, it is a good idea to check the Hemnes Tourist Association's website before you set off on your trip. Also check the link Plan your trip to Okstindan.
The road to Kjensvasshytta is not open in winter, and often only opens around SanktHans. If you want to visit Kjensvasshytta in winter, it is therefore best to start in Leirskarddalen. From Melkarhella, at the end of the county road, you can follow the marked scooter trail almost all the way to the cabin from February.
The Gråfjellhytta cabin is best reached from Inderdalen Gård, even in winter.
The main image above shows Rabothytta and Klemetstua as they may someday be transformed into ice castles in winter. The image was taken by former leader of Hemnes Tourist Association and one of the biggest enthusiasts behind Rabothytta, Svein Arne Brygfjeld.
