To tell the story of Rabothytta cabin, we have to go back to 1883 and the exploits of Charles Rabot. The French glaciologist, ethnographer and explorer was a good friend of Fridtjov Nansen. Similarly the story of Klemetstua, the nearby cabin named in honour of Rabot’s guide Klemet Person, takes us back to the same era. This legendary Sámi lived with his family and livestock under a rock shelter in the heart of Leirskarddalen.
In recent years, a musical has been written about this pair of adventurers. If you ascend Oksskolten, the highest mountain in Northern Norway, you will find Rabot’s name on a plaque at the summit.
