Buvik Gård – your guide to cultural trails

Jan is well-known in the municipality and is happy to take you on a discovery tour to look for hidden cultural traces.

Buvik Gård is run by Jan Gaute Buvik, a former teacher in Hemnes and sports consultant for the Norwegian Orienteering Federation. He is passionate about uncovering hidden cultural treasures and, as a pensioner, has scoured the countryside in the municipality, collecting, registering and mapping thousands of small and large cultural traces.

He has also created four booklets with a local history theme:

  • Never Forget (1982-85), about the prisoner of war camp in Korgen
  • Saddles and saddle farming in Korgen (1991)
  • Places, people and events in Hemnes (first edition, 2019)
  • Places, people and events in Hemnes (second edition, 2021)

The latter two can still be purchased. During 2025, a comprehensive overview of Cultural trail in Hemnes be ready also digitally, consisting of overview maps, images and information.

Anchored in its walks in the landscape, nearly 20 organized excursions are offered during the summer season. These can be shorter trips of 2-3 hours, and up to full-day hikes. The variety is great, both in the content of the excursions, and the physical challenges: From the local homestead - via forest huts, hunting and trapping, along rivers and lakes where there were previously log rafting and sawmills - and up towards the mountains to mineral skerries, depleted bogs, cairns and Sami settlements.

With many irons in the fire, Jan Gaute wants tour groups to book well in advance. You must be prepared for experiences in the changing northern Norwegian nature with clothing for the weather conditions. On some tours there is simple catering, on others you must bring your own packed lunch.

Welcome you shall be!
